Nick Gubbins is a left-handed batter and right-arm leg-spin bowler.
He was born in Richmond, Surrey and joined Hampshire from Middlesex in 2021, firstly on loan and then on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
Gubbins made his first-class debut for Leeds/Bradford MCCU during the 2013 season and his Middlesex career began a year later.
The left-hander was key to the Middlesex side that won the 2016 County Championship. At 22 years of age, Gubbins notched 1,409 first class runs at an average of more than 60.
England Lions opportunities followed for Gubbins who was tipped to be a long-term replacement for Andrew Strauss as England opener but hamstring problems hampered his progress.
After a few relatively lean seasons at Lord’s, Gubbins decided to make the switch to Utilita Bowl in the summer of 2021, initially joining on loan.
Gubbins made his Hampshire debut against Surrey at Utilita Bowl in early July, and made an immediate impact. Gubbins scored an unbeaten 137 against Gloucestershire in the County Championship, before recording a century and a four-wicket haul in the Royal London Cup against ‘el clasicoast’ rivals Sussex.
As a result, his deal was made permanent ahead of the 2022 season where he continued to excel. He made back-to-back centuries in the County Championship match with Lancashire, on his way to 754 runs in the competition.
In August, due to the absence of James Vince, he was made captain of a youthful Royal London Cup team and guided them to the semi-final, after topping their group, with 386 runs at an average of 42.88 at the top of the order.
2023 saw Gubbins’ influence on the team grow even further as he scored three tons and four half-centuries in the County Championship, finishing on 969 runs at an average of 46.14.
He also returned as skipper for a successful Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign, adding 404 runs as his side finished runners-up to Leicestershire Foxes. Subsequently, he was given the 50-over MVP award at Hampshire’s End of Season Awards.
