Musculoskeletal Podiatry Service

This branch of podiatric medicine focuses specifically on the biomechanics of the muscles and joints of the lower limb, and investigates how abnormal biomechanical issues may be causing pain, dysfunction, or delayed healing in the body.  Using a variety of methods, our team can assess your lower limb biomechanics and provide you with a variety of treatment options to help improve pain of dysfunction.

Conditions often seen:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shin pain
  • Flat feet (Pes planus)
  • Bunions
  • Knee arthritis
  • ITB friction syndrome

Initial Appointment

Assessments can last up to 60 minutes, and during this time our clinicians will take a thorough history of your presenting problem.  Following this they will conduct a clinical assessment of your joint movements, muscle strength, and walking gait.  This will help provide a clinical diagnosis of your problem, and your clinician will then explain the treatment options.

Treatments:

Treatments often involve a combination of the following:

  • Exercise prescription
  • Specific stretches
  • Advice around workload and training management
  • Footwear choice
  • Insole or orthotics prescription
  • Referral on to an Allied Health Professional or Orthopaedic Consultant

If your biomechanical presentation is a little more complicated, you may be offered a more in-depth biomechanical assessment of your feet, which utilises technologies such as “FScan” in shoe assessment, and “Dartfish” motion capture software, to gain more information about your biomechanical presentation.

Orthotics:

If it is clinically indicated that you require in-shoe foot correction, you will be prescribed a pair of orthotics which may either be an off the shelf option, or custom made. We offer two forms of custom orthotic: a fabricated plate made on site, often on the same day so you can begin using your orthotics immediately, or a 3D printed orthotic.  These orthotics are printed from a scan of your foot and usually take 10-14 working days to receive.  This array of options ensures that we get he right correction for you.

Custom orthotics are more expensive, but last a very long time, however off the shelf designs which we can adapt in our on site lab, offer a more cost effective option and are particularly useful for our younger clients whose feet are still growing.

Our highly experienced Podiatry team will always explain the options available to you, and be happy to answer your questions.

Joint Podiatry and Physiotherapy Sessions:

When a presentation spans both Podiatry and Physiotherapy specialities, we can offer a joint session which is both time efficient and also enables our clinicians to combine their clinical skills.  This service will provide extremely tailored care to the client, and often sees more timely improvements in pain and dysfunction. Please discuss this option when calling to book, if you feel you may benefit from a joint appointment with both a Podiatrist and Physiotherapist.
