Pilot Events Offer Women a Fun and Safe Introduction to Hard Ball Cricket

Hard Ball Women's Cricket in Hampshire

A series of recent events provided women with an exciting opportunity to try hard ball cricket in a supportive and enjoyable environment. These sessions were designed to help women transition from softball cricket to hard ball, with equipment generously provided by Serious Cricket through Hampshire Cricket Board (HCB).

On August 11th, 16 women from Easton, Twyford, Cadnam, and Oakley Cricket Clubs gathered at Easton & Martyr Worthy. The day began with warm-up drills, followed by a 20-over, 8-a-side match, where the teams were mixed and played a format similar to the W10 softball league, batting in pairs.

The second event took place on August 18th at Gosport Borough, attracting 23 participants from Gosport Borough, Sarisbury, Portchester, P&S, and Locks Heath Cricket Clubs. After drills, the group played another 20-over pairs match. Coaching support was provided for players not currently batting.

Looking ahead, the HCB plans to consult with clubs over the winter to explore further opportunities for women interested in progressing from softball to hard ball cricket.

“It was fantastic to see so many ladies participating in the pilot and experiencing hard ball cricket. There were plenty of smiles, and I believe many found it less scary than expected. The hard ball kits were a great help, and while some found the equipment unfamiliar at first, they quickly adapted. A big thank you to Easton & Martyr Worthy Cricket Club and Gosport Borough Cricket Club for hosting these events.”
