Portsmouth 'Street' Cricket Program Celebrates Success with Exciting End-of-Summer Competitions

U12 and U16 Competitions Highlight Growth of 'Street' Cricket with Fun, Inclusive Events for Local Children

At the end of the summer holidays, through the Hampshire Cricket Board, the Portsmouth ‘Street’ programme hosted two competitions for both U12 and U16 age groups at Portsmouth and Southsea Cricket Club. The competitions showcased and celebrated the recent success and growth of ‘Street’ in Portsmouth across 4 weekly, free ‘Street Club’ sessions.

On Tuesday 27th August, girls and boys aged 11-16 from Portsmouth ‘Street’, Southampton MCC Foundation hubs and Southampton’s Wicketz programme, attended a tape-ball, 7 a-side competition which saw 4 teams battle for the trophy.

Later in the week, on Thursday 29th August, girls and boys aged 8-12 from the Portsmouth ‘Street’ and Southampton ‘Wicketz’ programme met in Portsmouth for an 8 a-side soft-ball competition. Teams were made up from all abilities and genders, showing off their skills and creating a wonderful, welcoming atmosphere for all young people.

Both days were free-to-access for all young people and with lunch provided, sunny weather and great cricket on offer, families also joined the festivities, creating a vibrant atmosphere that bought communities together through cricket. Across two days, we engaged 62 individual young people in a full day of cricket.

“We are incredibly grateful for the amazing opportunities that Hampshire Cricket Board have provided through their Street Cricket sessions. My 9-year-old son, Henry, has had the chance to participate in several of these sessions, and they have been a fantastic experience for him. Not only has he been able to improve his cricket skills, but he’s also made new friends and built confidence in a fun and supportive environment. The best part is that these sessions are completely free, making it accessible to everyone. It’s wonderful to see such initiatives that bring the community together and encourage kids to stay active and engaged. Thank you, Hampshire Cricket Board, for offering such an invaluable programme.”
