Volunteer of the Month: Celebrating Exceptional Contributions to Cricket

Honouring the unsung heroes who go above and beyond to grow the game across Hampshire

Hampshire Cricket Board is thrilled to announce the nominees for our Volunteer of the Month, showcasing the incredible contributions made by individuals who help strengthen and support cricket in our community. This month’s selection is a testament to the outstanding dedication of our volunteers across the county.

Winner: Ian Crowley (Hegde End Junior Cricket Club)

Ian has been instrumental in the development of junior cricket at Hedge End for many years. A constant presence across all age groups — from Under 9s to those stepping into adult cricket — Ian creates a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment where every young player, regardless of background, can thrive. He quietly leads by example, instilling confidence and a love for the game while promoting the values that make grassroots cricket so special. Whether coaching, mentoring, or encouraging from the boundary, Ian ensures every child feels welcome and valued. His standout contribution is his unwavering commitment — week in, week out — to developing not just better cricketers, but better people.

Highly Commended: Pete Wild (Burridge Cricket Club)

Pete is an integral part of Burridge CC, serving as a dedicated treasurer while also coaching and managing an U15 team. He’s always the first to step up when extra support is needed for younger age groups and continues to play a key role in the adult teams as a wicketkeeper for the 3rd XI. Pete mentors young players transitioning into senior cricket, offering guidance both on and off the field. A long-standing member of the club, Pete’s commitment, versatility, and generosity make a huge impact.

Highly Commended: Joe Wooster (New Milton Cricket Club)

Joe is Mr New Milton. As 2nd XI captain and a dedicated member of the ground staff, he’s at the club almost daily, preparing pitches, cutting outfields, and setting up before heading off to play himself. He supports junior coaching on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, working with both boys and girls. On top of that, Joe lends a hand at club events, running the bar and helping with general upkeep. His commitment, energy, and willingness to pitch in wherever needed are unmatched.

May 2025 Nominees:
We are also delighted to recognise the following individuals who were nominated for their outstanding contributions this month:

  • Wayne Dennison (Hedge End Junior Cricket Club) - Wayne goes above and beyond with the U9s, showing endless patience and encouragement while helping each child grow as both a cricketer and a kind, supportive teammate.
  • Pete Van Der Westhuizen (Wellow & Plaitford Knights Cricket Club) - Pete is a true unsung hero, dedicating countless hours to the club — from coaching juniors, ladies, and men’s teams to preparing pitches late into the evening. At the recent W10 festival, he umpired, scored, coached, and even flipped burgers, all despite driving an hour each way to support the club.
  • Andy Parker (Hedge End Junior Cricket Club) - Andy’s passion, planning, and commitment since completing his ECB Level 2 have transformed the U11s, inspiring players to improve their skills and love for the game.

We encourage everyone in the Hampshire cricketing community to celebrate the hard work and enthusiasm of these volunteers, who make a huge difference to the success of our clubs and the enjoyment of players.

Thank you to all our nominees, and to the thousands of volunteers across Hampshire who make cricket the wonderful game it is.
