Terry Top-Scores as Second XI Triumph on Isle of Wight
Sean Terry hit an impressive half-century as Hampshire 2XI defeated MCC Young Cricketers at Newclose
Sean Terry (79) marked his return to the Hampshire Second XI with a match winning half-century as his side beat an MCC Young Cricketers XI by 139 runs in the Second XI trophy match at Newclose.
After batting first, Hampshire scored 277/9 off their 50 overs, with Terry, Adam Wheater (51) and Chris Wood (49) all making notable contributions.
In reply, the MCC Youth Cricketers XI struggled as they were bowled out for 138 with Danny Briggs (3-26) doing the damage with the ball.
Hampshire got off to a less than ideal start when Joe Weatherley (2), who recently signed his first professional contact with the club, was caught behind off the bowling of Zain Shehzad (4-58).
However, Wheater and Tom Alsop (25) recorded a fifty partnership to get the innings back on track with the former hitting a quick-fire half-century.
After both Alsop and Wheater fell, Wood and Terry continued to score at a quick rate. The pair put on 111 for the fourth wicket in just over 20 overs before Wood was caught by Jamie Harris off the bowling of Matt King (1-63).
Terry, who has been playing in the LV=CC County Championship for the first team in recent weeks, hit eight fours in an 84-ball stay at the crease before he was trapped LBW by Janak Valand (2-46).
Briggs (25) provided a late flurry of runs in the final few overs at Hampshire set MCCYC 278 for victory.
In reply, the MCC Youth Cricketers XI lost Harris (0) early as Wood and Moin Ashraf (2-31) kept the scoring rate down in the opening overs.
However, both Palash Joshi (20) and Ollie Graham (41) made good contributions with the bat for their side and they led the recovery after losing that early wicket.
When Graham was run out by Brad Taylor, the visitors were 87-4, but collapsed to 112-9 in just over eight overs, with Briggs and Ashraf quickly running through the middle-lower order batsmen.
King (18) showed some resistance with a last wicket partnership with James Thompson (9) worth 22 runs, before he was bowled by an impressive Brad Taylor (1-13).
Hampshire 2nd XI are back in action against the same opponents in a four-day game which starts on Wednesday.
