Half-centuries for Tom Alsop (85) and Arron West (71) helped Hampshire Second XI secure a draw against Somerset Second XI in the three-day fixture at Taunton Vale.

Hundreds from Marcus Trescothick (127*) and E Byrom (110) had initially helped the hosts post 403-7d in their first innings before Alsop and West then took Hampshire to 292-9d.

With little time remaining in the game, Somerset then reached 32-3 in their second innings before the match was declared a draw.

Byrom and Trescothick set about building a solid opening partnership and looked to be doing so before the latter was forced to retire hurt with the score at 32-0 after taking a blow off the bowling of pace-bowler Brad Wheal (0-64).

Two wickets then fell at the hands of both James Tomlinson (2-54) and Ryan Stevenson (1-80) but with Byrom still at the crease, Trescothick returned to resume his innings and the duo combined to take the total to a commanding 244-2.

Byrom departed shortly after reaching his well-made century and although wickets fell frequently at the hands of Alex Woodland (3-39) following his dismissal, Trescothick remained resolute to bring up his battling hundred and guide his side beyond 350 before declaring shortly after his departure.

Hampshire began in less than ideal fashion with two early wickets falling with just eight runs on the board but a 134-run partnership between the watchful Alsop and West led the recovery.

They both reached half-centuries but when both men were removed with 186 the home-side looked to be on-top.

However, handy lower-order contributions saw the total move past 250 before a declaration was made with little time remaining in the game.

Two wickets for Stevenson (2-16) and one for Wheal (1-12) saw Somerset lose three early wickets in their second-innings however the match headed comfortably for a draw as the points were shared between the two sides.
