Jonny Bairstow scored a quite brilliant century as England rounded off a superb summer with a convincing nine-wicket win over the West Indies at the Utilita Bowl.

Shai Hope (72) held the innings together with a brilliant half-century after a flurry of quick wickets whilst Ashley Nurse (31*) blasted the West Indies to 288-6 at the interval.

In reply, Bairstow’s century, as well as a half-century from Jason Roy (96) helped England cruise to victory, sealing the 4-0 series whitewash with more than 11 overs to spare.

Chris Gayle (40) made an uncharacteristically watchful start, but burst into life by smashing 36 runs in just six deliveries in a display of immense power-hitting to bring up the West Indies’ half-century.

However, just four balls later, the left-hander holed out to Liam Plunkett to give Tom Curran (1-62) his maiden ODI scalp, but the visitors had a productive powerplay, moving onto 65-1 after ten overs.

Kyle Hope (33) anchored the innings, but Plunkett (2-54) took a sharp return catch to reduce the West Indies to 85-2, as the England attack fought back, with the run-rate steadily declining.

Hope then nudged the West Indies into three figures, and alongside Marlon Samuels, the pair continued to rotate the strike well, guiding their side to 113-2 at the halfway stage.

The visitors continued to progress without any alarms, promptly bringing up the fifty partnership, but Samuels (32) was stumped off Moeen Ali (1-36) to end his cautious stay at the crease.

Hope then struck three boundaries in a row to bring up his half-century, but lost Jason Mohammed (25) as a useful partnership ended with the West Indies on 195-4 with ten overs remaining.

The visitors advanced past 200, but lost Hope at a crucial point in the game. Despite this, debutant Sunil Ambris carried on the momentum as the visitors raced beyond 250 in the closing stages, but Rovman Powell (11) was clean bowled by Plunkett the very next ball.

Nurse then powered the West Indies to 288-6 at the interval after an impressive 12-ball cameo, with 42 runs coming from the final three overs of the innings.

England duo Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow made an aggressive start to the game, finding the boundary at will as they promptly brought up their fifty partnership in the eighth over, and finishing the powerplay in a healthy position on 71-0.

Roy soon brought up his second successive half-century with a flick into the on-side as the hosts looked too comfortable with the run chase, bringing up the century stand with Bairstow.

The Yorkshire batsman also moved to his fifty in the 19^th over leaving England in a dominant position on 131-0 with the West Indies in need of a breakthrough.

That came courtesy of Miguel Cummins, who trapped Roy (96) in front with the score on 156-1 as the Surrey opener agonisingly close to his fourth one-day international century.

The loss did not seem to affect the England side, with Bairstow and Joe Root (46*) brought up their fifty partnership as the West Indies tinkered with their attack in search of wickets, but that prized scalp did not come.

Instead, Bairstow reached his second century of the series in a fine display of batting, with the knock coming off just 90 balls as the hosts moved to 237-1 in in the 33rd over.

The Yorkshire duo continued to dominate proceedings, moving their stand past three figures and Root smashed the winning runs to ease England to a nine-wicket victory to seal a 4-0 series whitewash as the curtain closed on the 2017 season.
