Lewis McManus, Shahid Afridi and Reece Topley helped guide Hampshire to victory in their opening NatWest T20 Blast contest of the seasion against Glamorgan.

The impressive McManus (59 from 37) picked apart the Glamorgan bowling attack on his way to his highest T20 score, helping Hampshire total 167-5 in the first-innings.

Afridi (4-20) and Reece Topley (3-23) then tore through the Glamorgan top-order to dismiss the hosts for 145 in their chasing effort, 22 runs short of their required total.

After being asked to bat first, Hampshire began positively through skipper James Vince (31) who got his side off to a flying start - the right-hander sharing an opening stand of 52 with Rilee Rossouw (18), with the pair hitting ten fours in the first three overs.

Michael Hogan (2-25) finally broke the partnership as he found the edge of Vince’s bat, the batsman having hit 31 from 15 balls, including seven fours.

Hampshire’s scoring rate slowed noticeably after the wicket, which in turn brought about a second, Hogan again claiming another as the visitors reached the end of the powerplay on 59-2.

A third wicket soon followed as Michael Carberry (4) edged behind and when the fourth Hampshire wicket fell shortly after three overs later, Hampshire nudged to 70-4 at the halfway mark.

But Hampshire recovered well thanks to McManus and George Bailey (37*), who guided their side to 102-4 after 15 overs, before the latter struck two consecutive sixes off Colin Ingram in the sixteenth over. He dealt de Lange the same treatment in the following over before swiping him for four to notch his first T20 half-century and move to his highest total in the format.

The 95-run partnership was broken by a magnificent catch in the covers by Colin Ingram to remove McManus, but Hampshire finished their innings with the momentum on 167-5.

The away-side then assumed control of the Glamorgan innings from the opening delivery as Topley struck with his first ball, before Colin Ingram drove to Gareth Berg (1-27) in the covers in the same over.

Glamorgan recovered to 43-2 at the end of the powerplay but the returning Shahid Afridi made an immediate impact.

The leg-spinner struck twice in two balls, bowling Aneurin Donald (25) before Kiran Carlson (0) was trapped LBW the very next delvery, as Glamorgan slumped to 44-4.

Jacques Rudolph (18) was the fifth man to fall, the third to Afridi, as he drove to skipper Vince in the ninth over at 47-5.

Chris Cooke (16) and Graham Wagg (50) had struck up a fifty partnership by the time Glamorgan reached the 100 mark in the fourteenth over, still requiring 64 of the last six overs. But Shahid Afridi struck for a fourth time, in the fifteenth over, as Cooke pulled to Michael Carberry on the mid-wicket boundary.

Wagg reached his half-century before he was caught by James Vince off Mason Crane (1-26), and Marchant de Lange (4) quickly followed as he was clean bowled by Topley with the home-side just 118-8.

Berg claimed a deserved first wicket in the final overs, Glamorgan needing 27 from the last six balls, and although he didn’t get the tenth wicket, Hampshire claimed the dominant win.
