Day One

Hampshire's bowling attack impressed to earn maximum bowling points before Yorkshire fought back to finish on top, on an action-packed opening day of the Specsavers County Championship season at Headingley.

Hampshire's bowlers worked incredibly hard to reduce the hosts to 152-7 in the afternoon session, however a century from England's Gary Ballance (120) helped Yorkshire post 273, before five wickets from Ben Coad  (5-18) reduced the visitors to 58-5 at the close.

Hampshire would have been pleased with their first-innings bowling effort, with Ballance the only Yorkshire batsman to total more than 37.

After reaching 110-2 just after lunch, Yorkshire soon found themselves in trouble, losing five wickets for just 42 following the interval with all of Hampshire's bowling unit contributed to the cause - Fidel Edwards (3-58), Liam Dawson (2-24), Gareth Berg (2-50), Kyle Abbott (2-64) all bowled well, with Brad Wheal (1-54) also claiming a scalp.

However, Coad’s spell proved to be pivotal in the day's final overs of Hampshire’s reply as the away side lost wickets frequently.

Rilee Rossouw (23) was the final man to fall in the day, with his resistance coming to an end with seven deliveries remaining.

Kyle Abbott (2*) and Liam Dawson (0*) will be the batsmen to return to the crease when play resumes on day two at 11am tomorrow.

Day Two

Hampshire seamer Kyle Abbott claimed a sensational seven-wicket haul on his first-class return for Hampshire as his side fought back on day two of their Specsavers County Championship contest against Yorkshire at Headingley.

The right-armer bowed superbly to take figures of 7-41, restricting Yorkshire to 187 in their second innings, after Hampshire were dismissed for 141 earlier in the day.

The visitors then successfully navigated the final four overs of the day without loss, leaving Hampshire requiring 310 to win with two days remaining.

After resuming their first innings on 58-5 in the morning session, Hampshire lost three wickets inside the opening 30 minutes finding themselves in early trouble at 75-8.

Lewis McManus (41*) and Brad Wheal (18) led the Hampshire fightback however, with the duo sharing a vital 52-run parternship for the ninth wicket.

Wheal eventually departed with the final wicket falling shortly after, and despite a courageous effort from McManus, the away-side found themselves with a 132-run deficit as Yorkshire prepared to begin their second innings.

The home-side reached 40-0 after the opening 10 overs and looked in a commanding postition, but three wickets in 17 balls for Abbott saw three Yorkshire batsman swept aside as they soon fell to 59-3.

Gary Ballance (55) led his side's recovery, taking them to 106-3 with a 238-run lead at tea. However, Abbott was the man to make the breakthrough yet again - the paceman trapping Jack Leaning (15) LBW to end their 56-run partnership whilst Bresnan (0) followed suit shortly after to reduce Yorkshire to 115-5.

Further resistance came from Andrew Hodd (54*) but the departure of Ballance at the hands of Brad Wheal (1-22) soon sparked a collapse. Liam Dawson (1-46) quickly claimed the wicket of Azeem Rafiq (2) courtesy of a stunning catch from Sean Ervine at first slip, before Abbott returned to the attack to take two wickets in two balls to leave the hosts reeling at 186-9.

Gareth Berg (1-37) finished the Yorkshire innings swiftly after, allowing Michael Carberry (5*) and Jimmy Adams (5*) to safely navigate the final four overs of the day without loss.

Day Three

Hampshire secured a stunning four-wicket victory in their Specsavers County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley, as the visitors successfully chased down 320 in their second-innings on day three.

A superb half-century from Jimmy Adams (72), as well as crucial contributions from the remainder of the Hampshire batting line-up, ensured the side remained in contention throughout the day.

Rilee Rossouw (47), James Vince (44), Michael Carberry and Liam Dawson (37) all batted impressively to see Hampshire assume a commanding position, before an unbeaten 58-run partnership between Gareth Berg (33*) and Lewis McManus (30*) saw Hampshire safely to their target.

Hampshire began well on day three, with Adams and Carberry sharing a 91-run opening stand and despite the latter departing just before lunch, Adams progressed to record a deserved half-century and guide his side to 103-1 at the interval.

Vince was the man to join him and he too looked in good touch as the duo put on 69 for the second wicket.

Adams would have had one eye on three figures in the afternoon session, but Rafiq trapped him in front to bring an end to a vital innings.

Vince and Sean Ervine (8) followed nine overs later and with 125 runs still required and six wicket's remaining, the match was seemingly in the balance.

The resilient Rossouw and Dawson continued to advance the total and they moved Hampshire beyond 200-4 at tea.

Both batsmen found the boundary with ease shortly after the break, as the pair struck four consecutive fours off Bresnan and Coad to take the score to 244-4 - 76 more runs needed for victory.

Former England seamer Bresnan kept things tight for the hosts and he was rewarded with the wicket of both Rossouw and Dawson in the evening session to leave Hampshire six wickets down.

But Lewis McManus and Gareth Berg battled magnificently to thwart a late Yorkshire charge and victory was finally confirmed late in the day courtesy of a huge maximum from Gareth Berg (33*).
