Hampshire secure draw at Headingley after rain-affected final day
Day Four
A final day washout saw Hampshire's Specsavers County Championship match against Yorkshire end in a weather-affected draw at Headingley.
While Hampshire’s Division One safety was secured earlier in the match, the eight points gained by Yorkshire leaves them within touching distance of avoiding relegation.
Heavy rain from lunchtime onwards yesterday (day three) and through the night in the Headingley area meant the outfield was unfit for play on day four.
Further showers blew across the ground through the morning before umpires Michael Gough and Graham Lloyd called an early lunch at 12pm and then abandoned immediately.
Both sides claimed eight points from the draw with Hampshire sitting fourth in the table and Yorkshire fifth.
Day Three
Just 33 overs were possible on day three of Hampshire's Specsavers County Championship match against Yorkshire as rain ensured play was only possible up until the lunch interval at Headingley.
However, Worcestershire's defeat to Essex in the afternoon session at Chelmsford ensured Hampshire's Division One safety regardless of any result at Headingley and next week against Lancashire at the Utilita Bowl.
Opener Adam Lyth reached 100 for the 23rd time in his first-class career as the left-hander advanced from 60 overnight to 134 not out as Yorkshire, leading by 27 on first innings, moved from 172 for four to 287 for five.
Yorkshire led by 314 when the rain arrived during the lunch break, and there was no more play possible.
Lyth has endured a largely frustrating season, with only two half-centuries prior to this, but he completed a fifth-wicket stand of 133 inside 42 overs with Jonny Tattersall, who added 43.
Dawson took the only wicket to fall during the morning, Tattersall caught at short fine-leg sweeping as the score fell to 265 for five in the 73rd over.
Lyth has hit 17 fours in his 209 balls so far, and he will be joined at the crease by Tim Bresnan on four at the start of the final day.
Umpires Lloyd and Michael Gough abandoned day three just after 2.30pm with 71 overs remaining.
Day Two
A battling effort from the Hampshire bowling attack wasn't enough as Yorkshire finished the stronger of the two sides on day two in the penultimate Specsavers County Championship contest of the season.
The White Rose county claimed a first-innings lead of 27 shortly after lunch as Tim Bresnan claimed a career-best haul of five for 28 in Hampshire’s 157 all out.
They then steadily built on that lead in the remaining 47 overs of another rain-affected day as Yorkshire closed on 172 for four, leading by 199.
Opener Adam Lyth’s unbeaten 60 is the highest score of the match so far, and the only fifty.
There is the prospect of further rain during the final two days of this clash, so a draw is still a distinct possibility, especially with Yorkshire still in danger of relegation.
Ex-England all-rounder Bresnan, 33-years-old, started the day with two wickets under his belt and with Hampshire at 79 for five in their first innings.
He claimed three of the four wickets to fall during a morning which saw Hampshire score just 77 runs in 40 overs, with Gareth Berg farming the strike late on from last man Fidel Edwards.
Bresnan had Kyle Abbott lbw for eight, Tom Alsop caught at second slip for 24 and Liam Dawson superbly caught and bowled one-handed for 10 as the score fell to 110 for eight in the 42nd over of the innings.
Matthew Waite then bowled Ian Holland to delay lunch with Hampshire 140 for nine.
Rain swept in just before the scheduled resumption, accounting for the loss of 12 overs from the day’s allotted 104. Play took place in blustery conditions throughout the day.
Berg was last man out, trapped lbw by Ben Coad for 25, the joint highest score of the innings alongside his captain James Vince.
Yorkshire lost New Zealand overseas opener Jeet Raval and Harry Brook (28) in reaching tea at 65 for two, a lead of 92.
Raval was caught behind off Edwards before Brook was caught behind off left-arm spinner Dawson’s first ball at the start of the session’s final over for 28.
Dawson later trapped Gary Ballance lbw as Yorkshire’s second innings slipped to 81 for three in the 21st over, a lead of 108.
Lyth and Tom Kohler-Cadmore then shared a fluent fourth-wicket partnership of 51.
Kohler-Cadmore hit three successive fours in one Abbott over before hoisting Dawson over mid-wicket for six to move to 30.
He was then caught behind off Ian Holland for 33, leaving the score at 132 for four in the 32nd over.
Lyth reached his fifty off 114 balls with six fours included inside the final six overs of the day and shared an unbroken 40 with Jonny Tattersall, who is 14 not out.
Day One
Hampshire just shaded a bowler-friendly opening day against Yorkshire as 15 wickets fell at the start of their Specsavers County Championship clash at Emerald Headingley.
Morning rain prevented any play until 12.40pm, with Hampshire opting for an uncontested toss before bowling Yorkshire out for 184.
Gareth Berg and Ian Holland picked up two wickets apiece before tea as Yorkshire slipped to 110 for six, but Fidel Edwards was their standout overall with four for 83 from 16 overs.
The visitors later responded with 79 for five from 23 overs, including two wickets each for Jack Brooks and Tim Bresnan.
Worcestershire’s perilous position in their clash with Essex at Chelmsford has made them now almost certain favourites to face relegation.
If Worcester go on to lose at Essex, they will be relegated, leaving Hampshire safe and Lancashire as Yorkshire’s remaining target.
The afternoon session was a helter-skelter affair which saw Yorkshire score at 4.4 runs per over in the first 15 (66 for two), two catches put down and a flurry of wickets.
Yorkshire were hurt by losing three wickets for two runs as they slipped from 70 for two in the 20th over to 72 for five in the 23rd, with Berg claiming two of them in breezy conditions.
Gary Ballance was trapped lbw playing to leg to end a fluent 30, an innings high-score. The left-hander passed the 10,000 runs in his first-class career in the process.
Jeet Raval and Harry Brook were bowled by new ball pair Kyle Abbott and Edwards as Yorkshire slipped to 22 for two in the eighth over before Ballance and Adam Lyth (23) steadied with a stand of 48.
Brook’s first ball had seen him dropped at first slip by Holland off Abbott, with the same happening to Bresnan later on off Holland’s bowling as Tom Alsop failed to cling on behind the stumps.
Ballance was the first of those aforementioned three wickets in a mini collapse.
Berg also had Tom Kohler-Cadmore bowled for two via an under-edge as he attempted to leave alone before Holland had Lyth caught at gully as he miscued a drive.
Then, in the final over of the afternoon, the 36th, Holland bowled Jonny Tattersall as the score slipped to 110 for six.
Edwards then added three more wickets in the first half of the evening as Yorkshire slipped to 160 for nine in the 50th over.
He had Matthew Waite caught behind, Bresnan (25) yorked with a pacy out-swinger and Steve Patterson also bowled. Abbott wrapped up the innings by bowling Brooks.
Brooks then impressed with the ball to drag Yorkshire back into the game as Hampshire slipped to 68 for five in the 20th over of their reply.
Either side of Coad getting Oliver Soames caught behind, Brooks trapped Joe Weatherley lbw and Jimmy Adams superbly caught at third slip by Brook.
Brook later claimed a second catch after Bresnan found the edge off Sam Northeast’s bat, leaving Hampshire at 63 for four in the 16th. That became 68 for five four overs later when Bresnan trapped James Vince lbw.
