Hampshire were one of five teams, including the Kent Spitfires, Somerset, Middlesex and the Essex Eagles, who could qualify for the quarter-finals along with the Sussex Sharks and Gloucestershire. Hampshire started the match in fifth place , level on 13 points with Somerset who by dint of a superior run rate occupy fourth place.

Glamorgan fielded an unchanged side from the one which lost on Monday afternoon to table-topping Sussex, with Nick Selman and Shaun Marsh facing Chris Wood and Liam Dawson. The latter was square-driven by Selman for four before Marsh pulled a short ball to the ropes at mid-wicket. Selman then biffed Kyle Abbott over the head of mid-on for four before drilling him through extra-cover for four.

Marsh also lofted Dawson to long-on for four before Selman swatted Wood in the same direction  followed by a six over mid-wicket and another four over extra-cover’s head.  But later in the over he miscued another drive into the hands of mid-off. 47/1 saw the arrival of Colin Ingram who began with a square-driven four through backward point.

Tabraiz Shamsi and Mason Crane then bowled in tandem with Ingram lofting the former over the River Stand for six, whilst Marsh flat-batted him straight for four before sweeping Crane to the ropes followed by a high-class on-drive, but the bowler had the last laugh as later in the over he bowled the left-hander as David Lloyd arrived in the middle with the total on 87/2.

Lloyd began by sweeping Shamsi for successive sixes before on-driving a third, followed for a fortuitous fourth as he clipped James Fuller’s first ball through Crane’s hands at square-leg followed by a drive to mid-off for four and a nurdle to third man for another boundary. A square-cut followed next ball but he then edged into Lewis McManus’ gloves and departed for 40 from 17 balls. With Chris Cooke as his new partner, Ingam swept and drove Crane for four and six.

Cooke began with a superb drive off the back foot against Wood for four whilst Ingram drilled the left-armer straight for a pair of sixes. He departed next over trying to do the same against Dawson as Wood held a steepler at long-off. 163/4 saw Callum Taylor join Cooke with the pair scrambling some singles before Taylor square-cut Abbott for four followed by a reverse-scoop for six.

Cooke also clipped Wood for four and six to see Glamorgan to 200 before lofting the left-armer over long-off for another maximum. He then pulled the next ball for six to square-leg, followed by a rasping off-drive for four and then holing out at long-off as Glamorgan ended on 216/5 – their third highest T20 total and their best at their headquarters having struck 19 fours and 13 sixes.

Needing to score at 10.9 an over James Vince and Aneurin Donald opened the batting against Andrew Salter with Donald surviving an early run out chance before Vince struck a pair fours against the off-spinner followed by two against Prem Sisodiya. Donald also swept the left-armer for four but departed in Roman Walker’s first over as he chipped a ball to Marsh at mid-wicket.

35/1 saw Sam Northeast join Vince who drove Ruaidhri Smith through point for four before drilling a free-hit to the ropes at long-off. Northeast nurdled Walker for four before adding further four as Hampshire ended the powerplays on 66/1.

But de Lange then removed Vince with his second delivery as he drilled the ball straight to Lloyd at extra cover. Rilee Rossouw replaced him and was felled by a yorker from the paceman but continud after treatment to his damaged foot. He duly hobbled some singles with Northeast who then pulled de Lange for a pair of fours as Hampshire reached 93/2 at the halfway stage. Northeast pulled Smith for four to take Hampshire into three figures but there was a dearth of boundaries against the frugal Salter until successive fours iun his third over.

But Rossouw then pulled Smith to deep mid-wicket where de Lange made a fine diving catch as Fuller made his way to the middle. Northeast sdtraight drove Salter for four as the equation became 87 off 36 balls. Northeast harpooned Sisdiya for six before drilling him over long-off to reach 50 off 36 balls. Fuller was nearly caught by de Lange at long-off when Walker returned in an over which crucially did not see a boundary as the task became 62 from 24 balls.

De Lange then bowled Fuller before Dawson pulled him for four as 52 were needed from 18 balls, But Sisodiya ended Northeast’s stay as he bowled the former Kent batsman. Dawson responded by sweeping the spinner for four but the task was still 42 from 12 balls. Walker then removed McManus and Wood in the penultimate over as the task became too great for the tail. Even though de Lange was unable to bowl the final over, Lloyd removed Dawson as Glamorgan earned a 28-run victory.
