Hampshire Cricket are pleased to announce the Club’s new Academy intake for the 2021 season.
Left-arm pace-bowler Josh Croom is the new addition to this summer’s squad with the 18-year-old featuring in a 10-man squad, alongside nine players who have been retained from last year’s playing group.
Croom, who has spent this winter working on his game at Darren Lehmann’s Cricket Academy in Australia, has impressed throughout his time down-under and the seamer has also held his own in South Australia’s grade cricket competitions.
Croom joins batsman Toby Albert and paceman James Trodd as the senior U19 players in this year’s Hampshire Academy set-up, with the trio lining-up alongside U15 all-rounder Dom Kelly, who is the youngest player in the programme.
U17 prospects Charlie Mumford and Huw Wheeler, as well as U18 quartet Harry Broderick, Kamran Khanna, Harry Petrie and Tom Prest, round out this year’s intake.
An exciting top-order batsman and spinner, Prest was recently selected for England’s Young Lions tour of Australia after being named in a travelling party to head to Australia in April with former Hampshire Academy batsman and current First-Team squad member, Fletcha Middleton.
We’re thrilled to add Josh to this year’s Hampshire Academy squad and he joins a talented group, with nine players from last year’s group retained for 2021.
Charlie Freeston, Head of Player Development
Josh has always been in and around the player pathway system and we’ve been impressed with his development, particularly in the last 12 months. He has excelled as part of our U18s programme and has also had a fantastic winter in Australia as part of the Darren Lehmann Academy and playing high-level grade cricket.
We’re excited to see what he and the whole squad can achieve this summer and are looking forward to what’s sure to be a promising season ahead.
Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a truncated 2020 season, Hampshire Academy finished third in last year's Southern Premier League East League, claiming four victories from their eight contests against the best senior players at club level in the county.
The side also enjoyed an excellent Southern Premier Cricket League T20 campaign, finishing as runners-up in last year’s competition.
Hampshire Cricket’s player pathway system, including the Hampshire Academy, has a strong history of producing talented youngsters that go on to succeed in the professional game, highlighted by more than 12 products of the youth system representing Hampshire throughout last summer’s campaign.
