2023 Women’s Big Bash League Preview

Five Vipers are involved in this year’s Women’s Big Bash which kicks off on 19th October

Southern Vipers players Georgia Adams, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Maitlan Brown, and Nicole Faltum are all featuring in this year’s Women’s Big Bash League which kicks off with Bouchier and Faltum’s Melbourne Stars playing Head Coach Charlotte Edwards’ Sydney Sixers.

Former Vipers Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr, Mignon du Preez, and Hayley Matthews are also involved for different franchises.

Maia Bouchier makes her return to the Stars since she featured in the 2021-22 edition of the WBBL where she scored 185 runs in 10 innings, whilst Adams and Bell make their first trips over to the Australian T20 tournament.

The opening batter will hope to lift the Stars from their sixth position in last year’s competition, and with the team being led by Australian captain Meg Lanning, with England’s Alice Capsey and Sophia Dunkley, there’s certainly a lot of firepower in the Stars’ batting lineup.

Seamer Bell was the 18th pick in the draft, and the second in the third round, sandwiched between England teammates Dani Gibson (Adelaide Strikers) and Bess Heath (Brisbane Heat).

She joins England captain Heather Knight, Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu, and South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp as Sydney Thunder’s overseas players with the aim of lifting the Thunder from the bottom of the table in 2022-23.

Whilst Adams wasn’t picked up in the draft, Strikers’ Head Coach Luke Williams, with whom Adams has worked with at Southern Brave, signed her up a couple of weeks later.

A late call up to the squad, Linsey Smith links up with Maitlan Brown as part of Charlotte Edwards’ Sydney Sixers where the team will be hoping to go one better and lift the trophy.

This year’s tournament begins on Thursday 19th October where Edwards’ Sixers, featuring Southern Vipers’ and Southern Brave’s Maitlan Brown, take on the Stars of Bouchier and Faltum.
