2024 Women’s Premier League Preview

Danni Wyatt was bought by UP Warriorz in the WPL draft back in December, and is currently in India with Charlotte Edwards who’s taking the reigns at inaugural champions, Mumbai Indians

Southern Vipers’ Danni Wyatt and Charlotte Edwards are currently in India ahead of the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) starting with reigning champions Mumbai Indians taking on last year’s runners-up Delhi Capitals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The competition kicked off with a bang in 2023, with salaries never seen before in women’s cricket, and the best players in the world taking part across the five different teams.

Charlotte Edwards’ Mumbai Indians sealed a nail-biting victory in the final, with just three balls remaining when The Blaze’s Nat Sciver-Brunt swept South East Stars’ Alice Capsey for four.

Mumbai Indians, led by current Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur will be aiming to go back-to-back as Edwards hopes to pick up her fourth trophy in the space of 12 months.

Wyatt was sold to UP Warriorz for ₹30 lakh in the WPL auction, and is ‘really excited’ to be taking part in her first WPL.

“I really got my head down and had a really good summer with England and in The Hundred,” Wyatt said.

“I did everything I could to put myself in the hat of getting picked up for the second year of the WPL and I’ve got that chance now so I’m going to try and embrace it all and enjoy this new challenge.”

UP Warriorz finished third in 2023 with England Women’s head coach Jon Lewis at the helm.

The squad features high-profile international stars such as Australians Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, and Grace Harris, along with England and Thunder spinner Sophie Ecclestone, and Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu.

Wyatt said: “We’ve got some quality overseas players there, and we’ve got a lot of young Indian players that were part of the World Cup winning squad last year in South Africa.

“I’m really excited to meet everyone and learn off different people, and if they want to learn from me then I’m happy to do that.”

The competition kicks off on Friday 23rd February with Mumbai Indians playing Delhi Capitals, with Wyatt’s first game for UP Warriorz taking place on Saturday 24th February against Royal Challengers Bangalore at their home ground.

The final takes place on Sunday 17th March with the eliminator on Friday 15th March, with all matches starting at 2pm in the UK.
