2026 Under 19 World Cup Preview

Hampshire’s rising stars Ben Mayes and Manny Lumsden have been included in England's U19 World Cup squad, with the tournament commencing on 15th January

The men’s Under 19s World Cup begins on Thursday 15th January, with Hampshire’s Ben Mayes and Manny Lumsden part of the England squad for the tournament.

The Young Lions have been placed in Group C along with Pakistan, Scotland, and co-hosts Zimbabwe, with Namibia also co-hosting.

Mayes and Lumsden, both aged 18, return to the England side having toured the West Indies in November and early December and will hope to carry their form from playing at Utilita Bowl in the summer with Hampshire into their upcoming international fixtures.

The pair have been in fine form, having climbed the ranks through Hampshire’s Academy and youth pathway, making their debuts in white ball cricket for the club in 2025.

Mayes, a right-handed keeper-batter, featured in both Hampshire’s Vitality Blast and One Day Cup finals, having impressed in limited-overs cricket, while Manny Lumsden made great strides in the One Day Cup with his fast-paced bowling.

On his debut in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, Mayes scored 74 runs from 55 balls in their 72-run win against Glamorgan, an innings that included nine 4s and four 6s.

Lumsden, who also made his debut in the One Day Cup match against Glamorgan, claimed three wickets from five overs of bowling, and ended the competition with six wickets from three matches – including the scalp of former England batter Rory Burns.

On the tour of the West Indies before Christmas, Mayes scored 111 runs and Lumsden took four wickets.

Across 2025, Mayes scored 369 runs for the Young Lions with a best of 82* coming against India at Worcester.

Lumsden took 12 wickets for England U19s last summer with four wickets coming in his second match, also against India, at Loughborough.

England’s campaign kicks off against Pakistan on Friday 16th, before facing Zimbabwe and clashing with fellow home nation Scotland.

Within the tournament, the top three teams from each group will advance to the next stage, with the final taking place on Friday 6th February at the Harare Sports Club.

The Young Lions will hope to be the first English side to win the U19 World Cup in 28 years, with England’s only successful campaign stemming back to their 1998 win over New Zealand in South Africa.

Australia, having won the 2024 edition of the competition, will hope to defend their title and reclaim it in this year’s campaign, which would make it the Aussies’ fifth Under 19 trophy since the tournament began.

The Young Lions' final warm-up match before the tournament commences saw England defeat India by 20 runs (DLS method) in Bulawayo on Monday.

India fell just shy of the 300-run mark when their innings come to a close at 295-8.

In reply, England's innings was limited to 34.3 overs in which Ben Mayes scored 34 runs from 37 balls, including six 4s.

Having walked out to the middle with the score 12-1 in the second over, Mayes helped his side get back on track with a partnership of 77 with Lancashire's Joe Moores.

Manny Lumsden also picked up one wicket from seven overs of bowling, with his fast bowling sending RS Ambrish back to the pavilion for 48.

Captain Thomas Rew scored a half-century to help England on their way, and the Young Lions pipped India to victory and will hope to continue their form in their first match on Friday.
