A Match To Remember: John Turner

Take a look back at one of John Turner's best performances in a Hampshire shirt

Having recently signed a new deal with Hampshire, we have taken a look back at one of John Turner’s best performances for the Rose & Crown.

After previously a couple of seasons playing 50-over cricket for the First XI, Turner came into the 2023 season hoping to make a breakthrough in the other formats.

He made his County Championship debut in May against Northamptonshire, ahead of the start of the Vitality Blast.

Though the right-armer was not picked in the opening five games, he made his maiden T20 appearance against Middlesex at Radlett, taking three wickets.

From there he became a regular in the side and showed just how dangerous he could be when they took on Surrey at The Kia Oval, despite wearing Anuerin Donald’s shirt.

The hosts were bowled out for just 124, with Turner taking out the dangerous Laurie Evans and Jamie Smith, before cleaning up Sunil Narine to finish with figures of 3-17 from his four overs.

Fifties from Ben McDermott and James Vince ensure that the Hawks came out comfortable winners.

Overall, John Turner picked up a total of 21 wickets from 11 Vitality Blast games – with an average of 11.76 and an economy of 6.67 – as the Hawks made it to a record tenth T20 Finals Day.

Though they were unable to retain their title, it was another successful Vitality Blast campaign for the Hawks, with Turner’s breakthrough a highlight of that.

Take a look at the best bits from his spell against Surrey below.
