Former Hampshire Captain hopes to see some of the younger players push for first team spots
Hampshire Cricket Assistant Coach, Jimmy Adams, has overseen the second XI for a number of years since his retirement from playing.
In 2021, Hampshire won the Second XI Championship after winning seven out of their nine matches, losing only one in the process.
Adams said: “It was nice for the guys to win and the attitude throughout the whole summer and winter was brilliant.
“They play for eachother, they want to win, but they have an understanding about how they’re going to develop themselves as cricketers.”
Some of Hampshire’s 2nd XI squad broke through into the 1st XI, including bowlers John Turner and Scott Currie, and batter Toby Albert.
Adams also hopes that other youngsters including Fletcha Middleton and Harry Petrie can go on to make their claim for the first team.
Adams said: “There’s always competition for places, both at second team level, but within the second team trying to push the first team group for their spots.
“At various times of the season, you get people that are a bit grumbly about their situation, that’s only normal, but what’s been standout is the way to be able to park that when it comes to the games.”
Perhaps the most notable 2nd XI graduate from last year is Tom Prest who, in just his fourth T20 match, reached 50 to anchor Hampshire Hawks’ innings against Gloucestershire.
“He got 300 in a second team game which is pretty rare,” said Adams, “I don’t know how many have happened, but it’s certainly not very many.
“He was so consistent with the way he went about [his innings], you see with a lot of guys, they get to 100, will get to a score they’re happy with and go into the next gear but Presty just went about it like a seasoned pro.”
