Toby Albert signed a rookie contract at the end of the 2021 season, then, almost straight away, jetted off for a ten-day training camp in Abu Dhabi with Hampshire’s Ross Whiteley.
While out in the UAE, the 20-year-old was given the opportunity to feature in the T10 league, where he opened the batting for Chennai Braves with Afghanistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Shahzad;
“It was a lot different, a lot quicker as you can imagine, but to be able to play with some of the guys I played with out there and be around those guys and learn from them is very good for me.”
Albert was modest about his breakthrough campaign in 2021, which included a 2nd XI T20 century against Sussex whose bowling line-up included England’s Ollie Robinson;
“To do it against a decent attack is nice but a hundred is a hundred, but doing it against the stronger teams is going to set you up for when you move up levels.”
He also scored two more hundreds last year for Hampshire Academy - 151 against Bashley in the Southern Premier League, and a 62-ball 137 in a T20.
Looking ahead to the 2022 campaign, Albert is aiming to grab any chance he has by the scruff of the neck;
“Hopefully I get a bit more time in the first team, but to play second team cricket and dominate that, then when I get the opportunity (in the 1st XI) look to take it as much as I can.”
When Albert does get his chance, he’ll be in the enviable position of playing with his role model – none other than Hampshire captain James Vince;
“The way [Vincey] makes it look so easy at times. There's definitely something that everyone looks to do, and he just does it so well.”
