Baker And Dawson Named In England Men’s White Ball Squads

Sonny Baker is called up to an England squad for the first time, as he and Liam Dawson prepare to take on South Africa and Ireland in September

Hampshire pace bowler Sonny Baker and all-rounder Liam Dawson have been named in England Men’s white ball squads for series against Ireland and South Africa.

Baker, 22, has been called up to England for the first time, having previously represented his country in Under 19s and ‘Lions’ teams.

The pace bowler, who has bowled at speeds up to 90mph, moved to Hampshire over the winter and has featured 16 times for the Rose and Crown across the County Championship and in T20s where he has taken 32 wickets.

In this year’s Vitality Blast, Baker claimed eight wickets in six games, with a best of 4-20 coming against Glamorgan at Utilita Bowl, as Hampshire Hawks qualified for the quarter-finals with an away tie to Durham on Friday 5 September.

Continuing his strong form into The Hundred, Baker was named Match Hero against Liam Dawson’s London Spirit where he claimed the wicket of Ashton Turner and conceded just 21 runs from his 20 deliveries.

He has taken four wickets in as many matches for Manchester Originals in this year’s edition of The Hundred having previously represented Southern Brave in 2022.

Liam Dawson is enjoying another exceptional season as he has claimed 13 wickets in 11 Vitality Blast matches, with an economy rate of just 7.09.

He was called up to take on West Indies in England’s three-match IT20 series earlier this year, and picked up career-best figures of 4-20 in his first match in England for eight years.

Dawson was England’s joint-leading wicket-taker against the West Indies with five and he went on to feature against India in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, where he struck with his seventh ball on his return to the England whites.
