Right-handed batter and medium pacer Francesca Sweet joins Hampshire following a successful trial period
Reed, Barry Lindsay (341, Amateur) born Southsea, Portsmouth, 17.9.1937.
He was an opening batsman who attended Winchester College and played one match for Hampshire v Cambridge University in 1958, after which a combination of serious injury and business interests took him away from the first-class game until 1964 when he began playing for Hampshire 2nd XI; then in late August 1965, he came into the Hampshire side as they sought a partner for Roy Marshall to replace Jimmy Gray.
There were three half-centuries in the four matches on his return, and from 1966-1970, until the arrival of Gordon Greenidge, he played regularly alongside Barry Richards.
In 1966, 1967 & 1968, Reed passed 1,000 runs, scored consistently, and was capped, although there were only two first-class centuries, v Glamorgan (104) and Oxford University.
There were two more against Minor Counties sides in the new limited-overs matches, among 900 runs at 36.00; he was also a fine cover fielder.
He played no more first-class cricket after 1970, but in 1976 was a regular member of the county’s 2nd XI, captaining the side, following the premature death of Geoff Keith.
For some years, he was the coach of Hampshire’s Colts and under-19 sides, and a number of those players went on to play for Hampshire’s first team.
Barry Reed's funeral is to be held on Wednesday 31st July at High Cross Church, Froxfield at 11am with the wake at The Trooper Inn, Froxfield.
