Big Bash League Preview

Ahead of the 12th edition of the Big Bash League, we have looked at the Hampshire plyers that will be involved

With the 12th edition of the Big Bash League set to get underway in mid-December, we have taken an in-depth look at which Hampshire players are involved in the competition and how they will fare down under.

James Vince – Sydney Sixers

It’s coming up to two years since James Vince’s sensational 95 in the 2020/21 final which won the Sixers their third BBL title. In the four seasons the Hampshire skipper has spent playing for the Sydney based side, they have made the final three times – though Vince did not play in the 2021/22 final due to his involvement with England.

Vince is again returning to the Sixers for BBL12 and, after leading the Hawks to Vitality Blast glory in July, he will be hoping he can produce more heroics in Australia this winter.

The Sixers kick off their campaign on Wednesday 14th December with a trip to the Adelaide Oval to take on the Strikers.

Ross Whiteley – Brisbane Heat

This year has seen Ross Whiteley picked up in the BBL draft for the first time. Whiteley has played in other franchise leagues around the world – including the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) – as well as being successful domestically in both The Hundred and the Vitality Blast.

The hard-hitting middle-order batter is joining Brisbane Heat for BBL12 which boasts an impressive squad already with the likes of former Hawk Colin de Grandhomme, Afghan spinner Rashid Khan and the competition’s all-time leading run scorer Chris Lynn.

To begin their campaign, the Heat will welcome Melbourne Renegades to Cairns on Thursday 15th December looking to add to their solitary BBL trophy from 2012/13.

Ben McDermott & Nathan Ellis – Hobart Hurricanes

Ben McDermott and Nathan Ellis proved to be inspired signings for Hampshire Hawks in their triumphant 2022 Vitality Blast campaign as they both played integral roles throughout the competition. Both players though first caught the eye for Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL.

Powerful opening batter McDermott was the top run scorer in last year’s competition – scoring 577 runs, including two centuries and three fifties, at an average of 48.08. Meanwhile, Nathan Ellis took 11 wickets in 2021/22, with an economy rate of 8.12.

The duo return to Tasmania this winter as the Hurricanes begin their bid for a first ever BBL victory against Melbourne Stars on Thursday 16th December.
