Born On This Day: 13th January

A new series from Hampshire Cricket historian Dave Allen marks the birthdays of notable and fondly remembered Hampshire cricketers

John Galpin was born in Gosport in 1843. He was a right-handed batsman and fast, round-arm bowler who played in six matches from 1875-1877 and one further in 1880 – Hampshire were not first-class in 1879.

From 1870, he played in a number of matches in the midlands and north of England, including non-first-class matches for Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire.

For Hampshire, he took 28 wickets at 16.50 with a best of 6-68 v Kent at the Ridding Field, Winchester College, their only match on that ground.

Despite his efforts, Hampshire lost by an innings, and he took 5-42 v Derbyshire at the Antelope in 1876 in a thrilling one wicket victory when he came to the wicket at number 11, to join RG Hargreaves (35*) and scored 1* as they added the ten runs Hampshire needed to win. Derbyshire’s Mycroft had match figures of 17-103, one of two occasions when an opposition bowler has taken 17 Hampshire wickets – and Hampshire won both. Galpin died in Luton in 1917.

Also: Robert Bolton 1913-1922.
