Charles Fry was born in Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire in 1940. A batsman, Charles was the third generation of his family to play for Hampshire - the only such instance for the county.
His grandfather was the great CB Fry (Hampshire 1909-1921) and his father Stephen played in 29 matches for Hampshire from 1922-1931, occasionally as captain.
CA Fry went to Repton College then Oxford University where he won his university ‘blue’ over three years 1959-1961, scoring two first-class centuries. He played in five first-class matches for Hampshire in 1960 at the end of the Oxford University term scoring 134 runs at 16.75 with a best of 38 on county debut at Trent Bridge.
He played a few 2nd XI matches in 1961, then in 1962, he played in one championship match for Northamptonshire. His last first-class match was for Free Foresters v Oxford University in 1968. He was President of MCC in 2003.
Also today: Charles van der Gucht 2000-2003.
