A new series from Hampshire Cricket historian Dave Allen marks the birthdays of notable and fondly remembered Hampshire cricketers

Neil McKenzie, Douglas was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1975. A right-handed batsman, he played for Transvaal, and South Africa in all three international formats, and in England for Somerset and Durham, before joining Hampshire in 2010 and playing until 2013.

He was a fine performer in all formats, scoring 2,898 first-class runs at 47.50 with eight centuries, 912 limited-overs runs at 36.48, and 1,289 T20 runs at 41.58. He scored 52 when Hampshire won the T20 Final in 2010, and was also a member of the 2012 T20 Champions, having got them to Finals day with an innings of 79* in the Quarter-Final at Trent Bridge.

He was a member of the Hampshire side that completed the CB40 ‘double’ in that season, and in a 2011 Championship match, he shared with Michael Carberry a partnership of 523 for the third wicket v Yorkshire at the Rose Bowl – a record total for any Hampshire wicket. His share was his highest score for the county, 237 in 475 minutes.
