Stephen Andrew was born in London in 1966. He was a right fast-medium bowler and lower order batsman who played for England under-19s, and made his debut for Hampshire at the age of 18, in a B&H match at the Oval, taking 3-12 (Man-of-the-Match).
The following day in the same competition he took 3-48 v Essex at Southampton and a week later he made his first-class debut at Hove, taking 4-30 in the first innings.
In 1987, he played in 14 first-class matches, taking 47 wickets (21.92) and in the following year played in the Hampshire side that won its first Lord’s Cup Final, v Derbyshire.
During his Hampshire career from 1984-1989, he took 147 first-class wickets (28.91) and became one of their few regular bowlers to take more wickets than runs scored (105) - in 36 limited-overs matches, he scored just six runs but was never dismissed.
His best bowling in limited-overs was 5-24 v Essex, and in 1990 he joined that county, playing there from 1990-1997, then in Minor Counties cricket for Hertfordshire for three seasons.
