Born On This Day: 6th December

A new series from Hampshire Cricket historian Dave Allen marks the birthdays of notable and fondly remembered Hampshire cricketers

Sean Ervine was born in Zimbabwe in 1982. He was a left-handed batsman who came to Hampshire as a pace-bowling all-rounder in 2005, who played in five Tests and 42 ODIs for Zimbabwe.

In his first season for Hampshire he scored centuries in the semi-final and final of the C&G Trophy which Hampshire won; in 2009, his 167* v Ireland was the highest limited-overs score at the Rose Bowl, and in 2010 he hit his best score of 237* v Somerset at the Rose Bowl, the highest innings by any Hampshire batsman in the lower half of the order.

In 2016, in his benefit season, he passed 1,000 runs for the first time, at 57.36. He scored just over 9,000 first-class runs for Hampshire at 35.17 and took 214 wickets; in addition, there were nearly 4,000 limited-overs and 2,518 T20 runs for the county. He was also a good slip fielder, with 147 first-class catches in 188 first-class matches. He played for five trophy-winning sides at Hampshire, in 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2012 (twice) as well as the Division Two Champions of 2014.

Also born today Charles Leat (1878-1885).
