Right-handed batter and medium pacer Francesca Sweet joins Hampshire following a successful trial period
John St John Frederick, was born in London in 1846 and was principally a batsman although he also bowled fast, round-arm.
He played for Oxford University 1864-1867 and for Hampshire between 1864, their first season as a county cricket club and 1869, although only once after 1866.
In five matches for Hampshire, he averaged 17.10 with a best score of 44 (& 39) v Middlesex in a 10-wicket defeat at the Antelope Ground in 1864. He took wickets in only one first-class match, but his 4-45 v Middlesex was the best analysis for Hampshire in that first season. His last recorded match was for MCC in 1888.
His nephew EB Frederick was a slow-left-arm bowler who played at Eton and in his early twenties, in five matches for the Hampshire sides of 1903 & 1904. John Frederick died in Camberley in 1907.
