Match Preview: Hampshire Men v Durham, Rothesay County Championship
Hampshire Men return Rothesay County Championship action against Durham at Utilita Bowl over May Bank Holiday weekend
Hampshire’s Liam Dawson capped off another extraordinary summer by picking up three trophies whilst Southern Vipers all-rounder Georgia Elwiss won two honours at the Hampshire & Southern Vipers End of Season Awards.
After a career-best season which saw Dawson score 1,138 runs and take 64 wickets, he was voted for by the fans as their Player of the Year.
He was also backed up by his peers as he won the Hampshire Cricket Players’ Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
Dawson’s total of 956 runs for the Rose and Crown in the Vitality County Championship was second only to James Vince, whilst his 54 wickets saw him the leading spinner in the country in terms of wickets taken.
It was no surprise he won the First-Class MVP, also for the second year running.
Georgia Elwiss, who will depart Southern Vipers for The Blaze ahead of next season, made sure her final season at Utilita Bowl was an impactful one.
She was the Vipers’ leading run scorer across both the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy as she picked up the Southern Vipers Batter of the Year award.
Having made a comeback to bowling fitness in the back end of the season, she picked up five wickets and, along with her mountain of runs, made her the Vipers Players’ Player of the Year.
Overseas star Charli Knott also picked up two awards, as her 32 wickets saw her pick up the Vipers’ Bowler of the Year award, whilst her 217 runs and 16 wickets in the Charlotte Edwards Cup saw her win the Vipers T20 MVP award.
Kyle Abbott took to the stage twice to pick up the Hampshire Bowler of the Year for his 67 wickets across all formats, whilst his 12 scalps and 121 runs in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup saw him lift the Hampshire 50-over MVP award.
No stranger to silverware, Southern Vipers’ captain Georgia Adams also took home two accolades, as she was voted as the Fans’ Player of the Year for her 575 runs and 29 wickets. Her 21 wickets in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy – the most for the Vipers – and 362 runs made her the Southern Vipers 50-over MVP.
After falling just shy of 1,000 runs in the Championship, James Vince won back-to-back Hampshire Batter of the Year awards with a total of 1,269 across red and white ball competitions for the Rose and Crown.
Benny Howell’s heroics in the Vitality Blast which saw him score 169 runs, including an unforgettable career-best 62* against Gloucestershire at Utilita Bowl, and take six wickets, led to him winning the Hampshire T20 MVP for the first time.
Wicketkeeper Rhianna Southby and Toby Albert won individual Young Player of the Year awards after two stellar seasons.
Southby, much-touted for future England honours, scored 224 runs and claimed 23 dismissals across both the RHFT and CEC – the second most of any ‘keeper in the country.
Albert made the most of his incumbency as a County Championship opener, scoring 388 runs in 12 innings – including two centuries – along with 273 runs in the One-Day Cup and 226 in the Vitality Blast which included a maiden T20 fifty against Surrey at the Kia Oval.
Southern Vipers head coach and England legend Charlotte Edwards was also honoured on the night, with Hampshire Cricket Chair Nick Pike presenting her with executive life membership, and inducted her as Vice President of the club.
