Four Vipers Included In England Under 19s World Cup Plans

Batter Abi Norgrove and spinner Eve O’Neill have been selected for England Women’s U19 World Cup squad with bowlers Poppy Tulloch and Daisy Gibb named non-travelling reserves

Batter Abi Norgrove and spin bowler Eve O’Neill have been named in England Women’s U19 World Cup squad, with pace bowlers Poppy Tulloch and Daisy Gibb named as non-travelling reserves.

The tournament will take place in Malaysia following the inaugural edition in South Africa in 2023, and begins on 18 January with the final being held at the Bayuemas Oval on 2 February.

Norgrove toured Sri Lanka with England U19s at the start of 2024, with fellow Vipers Ava Lee and Mary Taylor, whilst this will be the first taste of international cricket for O’Neill (16), Tulloch (18), and Gibb (18).

All four players have come through the Southern Vipers Academy via the pathways of Oxfordshire (Norgrove), Hampshire (O’Neill), Berkshire (Tulloch), and Sussex (Gibb).

All four girls fully deserve their inclusion in the squad, they have worked incredibly hard both on and off the pitch to put themselves in a position to be selected and we are all incredibly proud of them. The opportunity to train and play with the best of their current age group will undoubtedly enhance their skill and overall development.

Ian Cox, Senior Regional Talent Manager

Abi Norgrove (18) made her senior debut for the Vipers in the 2023 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy against Sunrisers, and made 49 in her second match against Thunder at Southport.

Eve O’Neill has been part of the Southern Vipers Academy for the previous two seasons, and went on to feature for Hampshire in their T20 competition which saw the side reach Finals Day, where she took four wickets to go with a further eight in the group stage.

It is always an exciting time to be able to name an U19 World Cup squad and all those chosen, including the non-travelling reserve group, can be very proud of this achievement. We hope each individual takes a huge amount from the experience they are about to have and uses it to continue developing themselves as a person and a player.

This also goes for the staff group, a number of whom across various roles are also employees of the regional teams and who will hopefully take huge amounts of experience and enjoyment from being a part of the programme.

Richard Bedbrook, Head of England Women Performance Pathways

Tulloch was included in various Vipers 1st XI squads this year but didn’t feature in a match. For her native Berkshire, she claimed 13 wickets in the County T20 competition, with a further three coming in the 50-over competition.

Playing in the School Games against Ireland and Scotland U19s, Tulloch picked up four wickets, including Ireland’s first-choice wicketkeeper Amy Hunter, and scored 49 runs with a best of 41*.

Daisy Gibb took eight wickets for the Southern Vipers 2nd XI with a best of 3-16 coming against Western Storm at Utilita Bowl. She took 12 wickets across the county season for Sussex, with a best of 3-25 against Hampshire in the 50-over competition.

What excites me most about working with the Under-19 group is the constant cycle of new talent and new groups coming through. This World Cup is a part of these players’ journeys, not the end or the start, and our message to them is to embrace the challenge, evolve ourselves and enjoy the ride. Naturally we want to do well but the programme is about developing these players in the future and for the long-term.
