From 2003-2010, Hampshire’s regional T20 matches were played only against the five teams from London and the south-east, but from 2010 and the expansion from 10 to 19 matches they first met the western sides Glamorgan, Somerset and Gloucestershire.
In that first year, a half-century from Allenby led Glamorgan to victory at Cardiff but in the return, Jimmy Adams with 100* (61 balls) and Briggs 3-27 led Hampshire to victory by 54 runs; their 199-5 remains our highest score against the Welshmen. Hampshire won the first encounter of 2011 by two wickets (Briggs 4-24) but thanks to the rain, the second lasted just one over. The number of fixtures was then reduced in 2012 so we did not meet Glamorgan again until the opening match of 2014, which we lost by 10 runs. We won the return thanks to half-centuries from Carberry and Adams, while Chris Wood, 4-16, bowled us to victory at Cardiff the following year.
At the The Ageas Bowl in 2015, Glamorgan posted 181-7 which is their highest total against us and gave them victory by 23 runs. Their captain Jacques Rudolph led the way with 77 & 2-8, while Michael Carberry scored 70 in a losing cause. The two sides won one game each in 2016, with Liam Dawson enjoying a fine match at home, scoring 76* and taking 4-23. In the earlier defeat at Cardiff, Liam had taken 2-15, while in Glamorgan’s victory, a promising young batsman, Aneurin Donald, top-scored with 55.
In 2017, we started the campaign with three victories; the first by 22 runs at Cardiff, with Lewis McManus scoring 59, and bowlers Afridi 4-20 and Reece Topley 3-23. Mason Crane with 3-21 and James Vince 60* took us to a comfortable victory in the return match at home on our way to Finals Day and a semi-final defeat to Nottinghamshire. We played Glamorgan first-up again in 2018, but their 168-6 beat us easily although we ‘recovered’ from 32-7. Skipper Colin Ingram with 71* took the home team to victory at Cardiff in the return, during a T20 season best forgotten by Hampshire. That was Glamorgan’s sixth victory in the series, against seven for Hampshire.
