Hampshire Cricket can announce that Gareth Berg will join Northamptonshire on loan for the remainder of the season, before making a permanent move to the County Ground at the end of the 2019 season.
After joining Hampshire from Middlesex in 2015, Berg has enjoyed five excellent seasons at the The Ageas Bowl, during which time he made valuable contributions in all formats as well as becoming a fan favourite for his contributions with both bat and ball.
The all-rounder has featured in 57 first-class matches across the last five campaigns with 1,959 runs at an average of 27.59 and 125 wickets at 31.34 apiece to his name. The 38-year-old has featured in 73 limited-overs contests in that time, totalling 620 runs and 72 wickets across both white-ball formats.
Berg was also an important part of the triumphant Hampshire side that claimed the Royal London One-Day Cup crown last season, contributing a crucial run-out and taking the final Kent Spitfires wicket to seal victory at Lord’s, whilst he also featured in this year’s title defence which saw Hampshire return to Lord’s for a second successive 50-over final.
Gareth has been an outstanding player and excellent club man. He arrived in 2015, got a wicket with his first ball and went on to become player of the year. Since then he has played a huge part in Hampshire teams across all formats. This year, first-team appearances have been limited and this move to Northamptonshire represents a great opportunity at this point in his career.
Giles White, Director Of Cricket
On behalf of everyone at Hampshire, I’d like to thank Gareth for his great contribution to the Club and wish him and his family well for the future.
I’d like to thank Hampshire for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love so much (after being told by medical professionals I probably wouldn’t take to the field again). The past five years have been some of my most enjoyable in professional cricket, winning a trophy & playing in two Lord’s finals and a few personal bests being notable highlights.
Gareth Berg
As much as I would have liked to have seen out my final years with Hampshire, I now have the great opportunity to play for Northants who gave me my first taste of County Cricket. I can’t wait to bring my experience and passion for the game with me in this new chapter. I want to wish the club all the best for the future going forward and to thank every fan who has supported me during my career here.
Berg last featured for Hampshire in July’s Specsavers County Championship fixture against Kent at the The Ageas Bowl.
