Getting To Know Ben McDermott

Following the signing of the hard-hitting Australian opener, we take a look at his career to date

Ben McDermott has had an exciting career so far, and will look to build on that momentum at The Ageas Bowl this season. He is the son of former legendary test cricket bowler Craig McDermott.

The powerful right-hander made his T20 debut in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Brisbane Heat in 2014, scoring 30 runs in a defeat against the Adelaide Strikers.

Following a stint with the Melbourne Renegades, McDermott made the switch to the Tasmanian-based Hobart Hurricanes ahead of the 2016/17 BBL campaign.

During his first season with the Hurricanes, McDermott recorded a maiden T20 century against his former employers, the Renegades. The 27-year-old scored a scintillating 114 runs from 52 balls, including smashing 8 fours and 9 sixes.

In December 2021, he made BBL history by becoming the first player to score back-to-back centuries - 110 against the Strikers, followed up with a 127 against the Renegades.

McDermott made his international debut in October 2018, in a one off T20 match with the UAE. He has then gone on to a host of T20 appearances, as well as representing Australia’s ODI side in 2021.

Most recently, McDermott registered his highest score in international cricket - a fluent 53 at the top of the order during the T20 series with Sri Lanka.

McDermott was also named as the player of the season for the latest edition of the BBL.

With his impressive BBL record, McDermott will join captain James Vince in forming one of the most exciting opening duos in the Vitality Blast.
