Hampshire Are National Disability Champions!

Trophy Regained After 2015 Bowl Out Heart Break

Hampshire's disability cricketers regained the national cup at a cloudy Wolverhampton Cricket Club, a trophy they last held in 2012.

Captain Alex Hammond (3 for 27), who had ripped through the Salopian upper order, collected the trophy from Mike Gatting, ECB's Cricket Partnerships Ambassador.

The passion and quality of cricket in these competitions are truly a credit to the players and coaches. More support is needed to expand the opportunity for others to be given a chance to have fun and make new friends whilst playing cricket.

It was a great team performance, everyone has contributed at different times through the season and has taken the responsibility to get wickets or score runs at key times, today was no different.

The national disability championship was suspended in 2013 to enable counties to focus on developing their grassroots programmes and increase player numbers.

All seemed well set on last year's resumption with this year's final opponents Shropshire 53 for 5, but the semi-final was rained off and defeat followed in a bowl out.

Adam James' unbeaten 33 was the top score as Hampshire were set a target of 114, but victory was far from certain at 59 for 5 as the Rigby brothers Callum (2 for 10) and Shaun (3 for 22) bowled well on a sticky track.

It was left to Hartley Wintney's Ben Hyde (37), a product of Fair Oak Cricket Club where he still coaches, and paralympic champion Corie Mapp (21 not out) to see Hampshire over the line by 3 wickets.

I'm delighted for the players, they are encouraged to play their own game with freedom and without fear, it's a pleasure to watch them perform. Hampshire were pushed all the way by Shropshire but team spirit, resilience and skill execution under pressure got them over the line.
