Hampshire Cricket have been awarded a professional women’s team from 2025 onwards, securing the future of elite women’s cricket at Utilita Bowl.
The award comes as part of a radical restructure aimed at delivering significant growth across the women’s game, with ambitious targets set to increase attendances and raise the profile of domestic tournaments.
From 2025, eight counties will host elite Tier One teams in a move away from the existing regional structure, with other counties participating in a further two tiers of competition.
To secure a Tier One team at Utilita Bowl is fantastic for the Club and the venue. We have seen incredible support for our women’s teams over recent years and are proud of our work delivering success on and off the field. We are grateful to all of the players and coaches who have represented Southern Vipers over the last eight seasons and are looking forward to building on their legacy as the sport enters a new era.
David Mann, Utilita Bowl CEO
Utilita Bowl has been the hub for professional women’s cricket in the south since 2016, hosting the record-breaking Southern Vipers regional team, who have won five of the seven major trophies available in the last four years.
The Vipers return to action at the iconic international stadium on Saturday 27th April before showpiece T20 double headers on Thursday 30th May and Friday 14th June and a standalone Charlotte Edwards Cup T20 match on Saturday 18th May.
The team, led by ex-England captain Charlotte Edwards, currently shares Utilita Bowl with Hampshire Men and has been fully integrated into operations at the venue, with a dedicated changing room at the front of the pavilion and equitable access to training facilities and support staff.
Utilita Bowl has been our base for almost a decade and we have enjoyed great support and success at the venue. We are truly grateful to all of our fans and to the counties who have supported the Vipers through the regional structure. We look forward to continuing to work closely with them in the future. The popularity and profile of women’s cricket has transformed over recent years, with sell out international matches and the unbelievable success of The Hundred. Everyone involved with the team is excited about what’s to come.
Charlotte Edwards, Southern Vipers Head Coach
The new structure will deliver further benefits for aspiring young cricketers, building on the success of the existing performance pathway in Hampshire, which has produced several Vipers, The Hundred and England players, with Maia Bouchier and Charlie Dean both currently holding ECB central contracts.
The two are set to feature for the Three Lions at Utilita Bowl on Saturday 6th July alongside their Vipers teammates Danni Wyatt, Lauren Bell, and Freya Kemp, as England take on New Zealand in the opening IT20 of the series.
Tickets for the match are 95% sold out, with hospitality spaces and pitch-facing bedrooms at Hilton Southampton – Utilita Bowl also limited.
