Hampshire Cricket would like to express their great sadness at the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Everyone at the Club extends their deepest condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family.

The Duke of Edinburgh had several contacts with Hampshire Cricket during his lifetime, with five occassions of particular significance, as noted by Hampshire Cricket historian, Dave Allen.

A Canterbury Meeting

The first instance came in August 1949 as The Duke of Edinburgh met the Hampshire and Kent sides at tea on the second day, during their annual match at Canterbury over the (early) August Bank Holiday.

Hampshire v Duke of Edinburgh XI

Just one month later, in September 1949, Bournemouth hosted a one-day single-innings match between Hampshire and Duke of Edinburgh's XI.

More than 10,000 spectators watched the match, played in aid of the National Playing Fields Association, with the Duke of Edinburgh’s XI claiming victory by one wicket.

Hampshire v Duke of Edinburgh XI - A Rematch

The Duke of Edinburgh XI returned to Hampshire again in 1954, although Prince Philip did not play in the fixture, with a one-day, single innings match contested, this time in Southampton.

In what proved to be another closely fought match, Hampshire prevailed this time, three runs the winning margin with Colin Ingelby-Mackenzie's half-century the key to victory.

1961 Champions

The Hampshire players met The Duke of Edinburgh again at the end of the 1961 season when he presented the team with the Championship Pennant.

1973 County Championship Triumph

In 1973, The Duke of Edinburgh met Hampshire’s captain Richard Gilliat and members of his Championship-winning side at Buckingham Palace, presenting them with their trophy.

Following news of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a two-minute silence was held prior to the resumption of play following the lunch interval on day two of Hampshire's LV= Insurance County Championship fixture against Leciestershire at Grace Road.
