Hampshire's Young Guns Star As England Reach Super Sixes

Ben Mayes and Manny Lumsden produced clutch performances as England qualify for the Super Sixes of the U19 World Cup having won all three group matches

England have reached the Super Sixes of the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup, with Hampshire duo Ben Mayes and Manny Lumsden starring as the Young Lions won all three of their group games.

In their opening match against Pakistan, Mayes third top-scored with 20 off 25 balls as England posted 210 all out.

Manny Lumsden was then electric in the field, taking two catches to remove Pakistan captain Farhan Yousaf for 65 and Huzaifa Ahsan for 17, and took 1-31 as England bowled Pakistan out for 174.

Against Zimbabwe, England restricted the co-hosts to 208-9.

Lumsden delivered an excellent spell, using his change of pace to great effect as he returned figures of 3 for 38 from 10 overs.

The Hampshire seamer got the key wicket of Tatenda Chimugoro, who was looking dangerous on 30 off 25 balls.

Lumsden picked up two further wickets to end with figures of 3-38 from his ten overs.

In reply, Zimbabwe struck early, with Mayes walking in at 22-1 following the wicket of Ben Dawkins.

England were soon in a spot of bother at 42 for 2, before skipper Thomas Rew joined Mayes to steady the chase.

What followed was a match-defining partnership that took the game away from the hosts.

Rew led from the front smashing 86 off 66 balls, while Mayes too looked in imperious touch for his 77 from 72 balls.

Both batters took the spinners on to perfection, using the wind to their advantage, hammering four sixes each.

The duo partnered up for an unbeaten 167-run stand from 128 balls, propelling England to a thumping win inside 28 overs.

18-year-old Mayes then continued from where he left off against Zimbabwe, with a record-breaking innings against Scotland.

Coming in at three after the early wicket of Ben Dawkins, Mayes smashed a breathtaking 191 off 117 balls as the Young Lions piled up a mammoth 404 for 6 after being put in to bat.

He brought up his century in just 65 balls – the fastest ever by a Young Lion, surpassing captain Thomas Rew’s previous record of 75 balls against India.

Mayes hammered 18 fours and eight sixes, falling just one run short of breaking the highest individual score record in the Under 19 World Cup, set by Viran Chamuditha against Japan earlier in the competition.

Records continued to tumble as Mayes went past Dan Lawrence’s 174 in 2016 to register the highest individual score by an England Men’s Under-19 batter in ODIs. He also overtook Ben Stokes’ senior England ODI record of 182, set against New Zealand in 2023.

England’s bowlers then wrapped things up clinically, dismissing Scotland for 152 in 44.5 overs to seal a monumental victory and maintain their unbeaten run in the group stage.

Manny Lumsden claimed two wickets from his four overs to extend his tally to six as he became England’s joint-leading wicket taker and joint third-leading in the competition so far.

He cleaned up Ollie Jones with a peach of a delivery which sent the off stump cartwheeling before a bumper did for Jake Woodhouse and the edge was safely pouched by Thomas Rew with the gloves.

Across three matches, Mayes now tops the tournament run charts, amassing 288 runs at an astonishing average of 144, striking at 134.58.

England finish the group stage with three wins out of three and momentum firmly on their side.

The Young Lions will take four points through to the Super Six stage. They will play two matches in the next phase, beginning with a clash against the side finishing second in Group B in Bulawayo on Monday. The top two teams at the end of the Super Six stage will progress to the semi-finals.
