Hampshire all-rounder Ian Holland has once again been representing the USA this month after making his international debut back in 2019.
The States are taking part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier tournament being hosted in Antigua.
A seven-team group includes Canada, Belize, Bahamas, Argentina, Bermuda and Panama.
After three fixtures the USA are undefeated and top of the group having beaten Belize, Panama, and Bermuda.
Holland has stood out with the ball for his side, bowling four overs in the first match against Belize, only conceding four runs and taking two wickets as Belize could only muster 64 from their full 20 overs. The US cruised to the target, securing victory by 10 wickets.
It was a similar story in the second match, bowling three overs, only conceding three runs and once again taking two wickets Panama were restricted to 85 with the Hampshire man picking up player of the match.
The third fixture of the competition saw Holland face off against Bermuda which featured Southern Brave all-rounder Delray Rawlins.
After setting Bermuda 173 to win, The USA cruised to victory with Holland once again showed his class, going for only 21 runs from his four overs, chipping in with two key wickets.
The US then faced off with North American neighbours Canada in a battle the undefeated sides. Bowling first, Holland dismissed both of the Canadian openers, both bowled. The US were set 143 to win.
With 13 required off the last over, something bizarre happened.
Needing three from the last ball, Ali Khan swung and missed at a delivery and Rusty Theron at the non-striker’s end ran through for a bye.
The Canadian wicket-keeper broke the stumps at the striker’s end and the whole team ran off in celebration, thinking they had won the tie, in the confusion the USA pair took advantage to run a second bye and take the game to a super over.
Team USA batted first in the super over and scored 22 from the six deliveries, Canada fell 8 runs short of the target. USA remain undefeated and have gained qualification to the global qualifiers next year.
USA faced Argentina in the penultimate game of the tournament game on Thursday 11th November at North Sound cricket ground.
Argentina won the toss and elected to bowl first which worked in the USA’s favour. Argentina limped to 90/7 from the 20 overs. Holland once again keeping it tight from his 4 overs, conceding only 17 runs and taking one wicket.
Bahamas were the USA’s final opponents in the tournament as they managed to make it six wins out of six with a ten-wicket victory in Antigua.
Tight bowling from the US was key to victory once again, managing to restrict the Bahamas to only 90 runs from the 20 overs.
Holland bowled an economic spell only conceding 19 runs and taking another wicket.
A change of tactic saw Dutchy open the batting in response and it seemed to pay off, the Hampshire man ended 39 not out as the target was chased down with 7.5 overs to spare.
The US and Canada now progress to the Global Qualifiers and will face off against sides like Ireland, Jersey, Zimbabwe, Oman and the Netherlands for the chance to participate in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
