ILT20 Preview

Ahead of the International League T20 tournament, we have looked at the Hampshire players who will be involved

The International League T20 (ILT20) begins today (Friday 13th January) with the opening game taking place in Dubai between Dubai Capitals and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. Ahead of the inaugural edition of the tournament, we have looked at which Hampshire players will be taking part.

James Vince & Liam Dawson – Gulf Giants

Hampshire skipper James Vince and all-rounder Liam Dawson have headed out to the far east to join Gulf Giants. Vince, who has recently been playing for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), was selected as captain and will lead the Giants throughout the tournament. Liam Dawson will be returning to Abu Dhabi where he took part in the T10 League for Northern Warriors in November.

Both are experienced players in the T20 format and played vital roles in Hampshire Hawks’ Vitality Blast triumph in 2022.

The Giants begin their ILT20 campaign on Sunday 15th January when they take on Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.

Benny Howell – Desert Vipers

Benny Howell, who made his return to Hampshire in August, has already played in a few franchise leagues since the end of the English domestic season. The all-rounder started in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, before helping Colombo Stars to the Lanka Premier League (LPL) final. He then went on to play in two games for Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Now, Howell has joined up with Desert Vipers for the ILT20 who boast an impressive team with the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga, Alex Hales and captain Colin Munro.

Their first games will also be on Sunday 15th January as they face off against Sharjah Warriors.

Brad Wheal – MI Emirates

The final Hampshire player involved in the ILT20 is fast bowler Brad Wheal who has joined Kieron Pollard’s MI Emirates. The South African born Scottish international took 22 wickets for Hampshire Hawks in last year’s Vitality Blast and four wickets for his county in the T20 World Cup.

Wheal will be hoping to make an impact for MI Emirates which boasts a squad with an abundance of international talents including Trent Boult and Dwayne Bravo.

They start their tournament against Sharjah Warriors on Saturday 14th January.
