The Ashes series that secured his spot in history
To mark the upcoming closure of the ticket ballot for 2023's ODIs at The Ageas Bowl - the free-to-enter ballot closes at 11:59pm on Tuesday 18th October - we're looking back at some of the most notable international match to have taken place at The Ageas Bowl over the years.
In 2017, Mark Wood held his nerve to defend seven from the final over as England defeated South Africa by two runs and secured a series win.
England batted first, with Ben Stokes showing his explosive capabilities, scoring his second ODI century.
Jos Buttler (65*) and Stokes both had a strike rate of over 120 as England scored 330/6 from their 50 overs.
Quinton De Kock got the Proteas off to a fast start in reply. He was robbed of a deserved century by Moeen Ali, who gripped one past his outside edge to see the back of the South African opener for a beautiful 98.
Liam Plunkett was the pick of the England bowlers, taking three wickets, including the dangerous AB De Villiers.
South Africa needed from the final over, bowled by Mark Wood. The Durham man only conceded four, giving England the win.
