Robin Smith: The Judge Who Stood Tall In The Ashes
A masterful batter whose courage defined Ashes series and cemented his place in Hampshire & England history.
Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce that batsman Joe Weatherley has signed a new contract extension.
The 23-year-old has put pen-to-paper on an extended deal, committing his future to the club.
Born in Winchester, Weatherley is a product of the club’s player pathway system and having representing Hampshire at age group and academy level – as well as captaining England U19s -, he has gone on to feature prominently as part of the first-team squad.

After making a handful of appearances following his first-team debut in 2016 and subsequently in 2017, the right-hander enjoyed an excellent 2018 campaign, totalling 772 runs across all formats whilst also recording maiden centuries in both the County Championship and the One-Day Cup. Weatherley was also an important part of the triumphant Royal London One-Day Cup side that claimed victory at Lord’s in May 2018.
The young batsman had made a positive start to the County Championship in 2019, totalling 341 runs over his first nine innings to begin the campaign, before a fractured ankle cut-short his season in July.
Joe is a good young player with a genuine appetite for scoring runs, so it’s great news for the club and obviously exciting for him too. Joe has come through our player pathway system and he’s demonstrated his ability at this level over the last couple of years. He’ll be keen to push on and cement his spot in the side this season.
Giles White, Director Of Cricket
I absolutely love playing for Hampshire and being an academy product means a lot to me. I’m looking forward to an exciting 2020 and beyond with the club as we push for silverware.
