Keith Barker Extends Hampshire Contract

Keith Barker is staying at The Ageas Bowl at least until the end of the 2024 season

Hampshire Cricket are pleased to announce that all-rounder Keith Barker has signed a two-year contract extension and will now remain at the Club until at least the end of the 2024 season.

He arrived at The Ageas Bowl at the end of the 2018 season following a nine-year spell with Warwickshire where he racked up 240 appearances across all formats, scoring 4,497 runs and taking 497 wickets.

Since joining, the all-rounder has become a vital member of Hampshire’s LV= Insurance County Championship squad, contributing with both the bat and the ball.

In 2019, his first season at the Club, Barker racked up 37 wickets – boasting an impressive economy of just 2.82 – and scored 357 runs as he played in all but one of Hampshire’s County Championship matches.

It’s a brilliant feeling. The Club have been amazing with me ever since I joined, I can't think of anywhere else I would want to play my cricket. I get on really well with all the players and coaching staff, and I’m looking forward to building on the success we had this season over the next two years.

After the COVID-19 pandemic and an injury limited him to just two games in 2020, he regained his form the following season with 379 runs and 41 wickets, at an average of just 18.41. He also recorded career-best figures of 7-46 against Nottinghamshire at The Ageas Bowl.

This season Barker was part of Hampshire’s fast bowling trio that took over 150 wickets in the County Championship, alongside Mohammad Abbas and Kyle Abbott.

He was responsible for 52 of those, at an average of 22.38, with three five-wicket hauls – the best of which came in the second innings at Taunton as he recorded figures of 6-27. Barker also added 595 runs at 29.75, with three half-centuries.

As a result, the 36-year-old was named as Fans’ Player of the Year and Red Ball Bowler of the Year – which he shared with Abbott – at Hampshire’s 2022 End of Season Awards. He was also honoured by the PCA as the County Championship Player of the Year and given a place in their Men’s Team of the Year.

I can’t speak highly enough of Keith; he has been great for us over the years. As well as being a wonderfully skilful and consistent performer, he has become a popular and influential figure around the Club.
