Hampshire begin their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign against Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Utilita Bowl on Friday.

The Rose & Crown finished as runners-up in last year's competition, under the captaincy of Nick Gubbins, after narrowly losing out in the final to Leicestershire at Trent Bridge.

Meanwhile, the Steelbacks have struggled in 50-over cricket for a number of years and last qualified for the knockout stages in 2016.

The two sides' last meeting in List A cricket came at Newclose on the Isle of Wight in 2022 when Hampshire won a low scoring thriller.

Hampshire Squad

Hampshire have named a 12-player squad for their opening match against Northamptonshire.

Nick Gubbins remains as skipper after last year, as cover for club captain James Vince, with Tom Prest picked as vice-captain.

Kyle Abbott is included for the first time since he captained the one-day side during the 2021 season, while fellow overseas star Muhammad Abbas is in line to make his List A debut for the Club. Brad Wheal will also be involved, having only played four times last year due to his involvement in The Hundred.

Youngsters Joseph Eckland, Eddie Jack and Dom Kelly are once again selected after playing a handful of matches in last year's competition.

During the National Counties match against Dorset, Toby Albert (132) and Fletcha Middleton (82) top scored with the bat, before Abbas took 6-31.

Northamptonshire Steelbacks

Captain: Lewis McManus

Northamptonshire have struggled in the One Day Cup since it took over from the 40-over competition in 2014, having only qualified from the group stage once during that time – making it to the quarter-final in 2016. Last year saw more proof of this as they finished sixth out of nine teams in Group B and were six points off of the qualification places. A home defeat to Derbyshire came during their first match of 2024, losing by just two wickets.

Despite their record, the Steelbacks still boast a more than capable squad. Skippered by former Hampshire wicket-keeper batter, Lewis McManus, both the batting and bowling units feature some useful options. Star of the show is Indian batter Prithvi Shaw who's 244 against Somerset last year was the sixth highest List A score ever. He opens the batting alongside Emilio Gay, while Ricardo Vasconcelos comes in at three. All-rounders Rob Keogh and Saif Zaib are always dangerous players, as are Ben Sanderson and Jack White with the ball in hand. 19-year-old Raphael Weatherall is also one to watch after making his debut in all three formats for Northamptonshire this summer.
