The Southern Vipers welcome the Surrey Stars to the The Ageas Bowl for their opening match of the inaugural Kia Super League.
Southern Vipers Squad:
Led by former England captain Charlotte Edwards, the Southern Vipers have a well-balanced mix of youth and experience. Edwards has led her team to World Cup and World T20 trophy wins and three Ashes victories, whilst fellow opener Suzie Bates is one of the leading players in the world game, rated as the second-best batter and third-best all-rounder in the ICC ODI rankings.
The Vipers’ middle order could consist of the experienced Sara McGlashan and Arran Brindle whilst 20-year old left-armer Tash Farrant will form a key part of the bowling attack.
The Opposition:
Captained by England all-rounder Natalie Sciver, the Surrey Stars have been hit by injuries before the competition has even started. Most notably, Australia skipper Meg Lanning misses out through injury.
However, the Stars’ side is full of match-winners with England big-hitter Tammy Beaumont likely to open the batting whilst New Zealander Lea Tahuhu is regarded as one of the quickest bowlers in the women's game.
What the Team Say:
All the teams are going to be tough to play against and Surrey will be a difficult start for us. They’ll obviously miss Meg Lanning, but they’ve got some quality players in their squad and I’m sure they will have a strong side out on Sunday. I think we know if we get over 140 we’ll have a good chance of winning the game, but we’ve got to play to the conditions and play to the opposition. Everyone is just keen to get started now and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead.
Charlotte Edwards
