Match Preview: Western Storm v Southern Vipers & Southern Vipers v Yorkshire Diamonds, Kia Super League
The Southern Vipers take on Western Storm at Bristol before returning to the The Ageas Bowl to face Yorkshire Diamonds
After securing a thumping victory over Surrey Stars at Arundel last week, Southern Vipers prepare for a bumper week of Kia Super League action with back-to-back fixtures this Tuesday and Wednesday against Western Storm and Yorkshire Diamonds respectively.
Southern Vipers Squad:
An unchanged 15-strong squad has been named for this week’s matches against Western Storm and Yorkshire Diamonds.
Danni Wyatt struck a superb record-breaking century against the defending champions on Sunday – her knock was the second-fastest and second-highest of all time in the competition – taking her tally to 205 runs so far in this year’s campaign and ensuring she sits third in the list of top run-getters in 2019.
Tash Farrant has enjoyed an equally impressive tournament so far, claiming nine wickets at an average of just 10.44 in her five matches, the best return of anyone in this year’s Kia Super League.
The Opposition:
Western Storm
Western Storm have had a fantastic 2019 KSL so far, claiming victories in all six of their fixtures with just four games to go in the league phase, including a narrow five-wicket win off the penultimate delivery last time out against Lancashire Thunder.
Last year’s beaten semi-finalists boast a strong squad which features England captain Heather Knight along with her Three Lions teammate Fran Wilson. Powerful Indian batsman Smriti Mandhana leads a strong top-order which also features experienced New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Rachel Priest and the hosts won’t be short of dangers with both bat and ball.
Yorkshire Diamonds
With just one victory from their five contests this year, Yorkshire Diamonds are in desperate need of positive results as they look to sneak a third-place finish and a finals day spot.
The northern side are not short of talent with overseas duo Alyssa Healy and Jemimah Rodrigues joining England’s Lauren Winfield, Katherine Brunt and Katie George, but it is two young local players who lead the way in the side’s wickets and runs tallies so far this season with Helen claiming five scalps and Hollie Armitage contributing 133 runs.
