Men’s Bowling Coach Graeme Welch To Step Down
Hampshire men’s bowling coach Graeme ‘Pop’ Welch will leave the club and re-join Warwickshire at the conclusion of his tenure
Hampshire men’s bowling coach Graeme ‘Pop’ Welch will leave the club to at the end of his tenure.
He will re-join Warwickshire, with whom he won the County Championship with in 2012 and 2021.
Welch joined the club in 2021 and has played an important part in the development and success of Hampshire’s bowling group.
During his time, Hampshire’s attack has consistently been among the strongest in the county game, with bowlers earning England recognition including Sonny Baker, John Turner, and Scott Currie, while Liam Dawson’s resurgence has also seen him return to the international stage.
Hampshire bowlers have regularly featured in the PCA’s MVP standings, underlining the quality and consistency of performances across formats.
It has been an absolute privilege to work with Hampshire’s bowlers over the past four years. To see players rewarded with England opportunities, international recognition and career best seasons has been incredibly special, and I am proud of the standards, resilience, and pride they have shown. I would like to thank the players and the supporters for making my time here so memorable, and I wish Hampshire every success in the seasons ahead.
Graeme Welch
Alongside his role at Hampshire, Welch also contributed to success in The Hundred with Utilita Bowl-based Southern Brave; he won the men’s competition in the inaugural year, further showcasing his ability to guide and develop high-performing bowling groups on the biggest of stages.
The two-time County Championship winner, who lifted the trophy in 1994 & 1995 with Warwickshire, has also worked within England’s coaching set up along with roles at Essex, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire.
