Robin Smith: The Judge Who Stood Tall In The Ashes
A masterful batter whose courage defined Ashes series and cemented his place in Hampshire & England history.
Hampshire had reached their third successive T20 Blast Finals Day and after defeating Somerset in the semi-final, were very much the underdogs against a strong Yorkshire Carnegie line-up in Cardiff.
Having won the toss and electing to bat, Hampshire’s innings failed to gather any real momentum with scores from Jimmy Adams (43), James Vince (36) and a late flurry from Simon Katich (25) propelled them up to a competitive 150-6 from their allotted overs.
Yorkshire began their reply with intent, until Dimitri Mascarenhas knocked back Andrew Gale’s middle stump. All of a sudden, a star-studded Yorkshire top six began to buckle. From 24-0 to 47-4: Phil Jacques, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow failed to cause the scorer’s too much trouble.
David Miller’s fantastic knock of 72* was in vein as a baby-faced Chris Wood (3-26) took three wickets in the final over to spark breath-taking celebrations in Cardiff.
