Robin Smith: The Judge Who Stood Tall In The Ashes
A masterful batter whose courage defined Ashes series and cemented his place in Hampshire & England history.
We’re kicking off each week in style as we celebrate a special moment from the 2019 season every Monday.
Aiden Markram put in a number of memorable performances during his stint with Hampshire at the beginning of the 2019 season, performances usually typified by his graceful style with a bat in hand.
However, when Middlesex visited the The Ageas Bowl during the group stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup Markram also made a splash with the ball.
Hampshire, put in by the visitors after losing the toss, made a steady start to their innings - Markram opening with Alsop (23) who was dismissed in the tenth over.
Vince (14) and Northeast (18) came and went as Markram continued chalking up the runs, making 88 (90 balls) before he was dismissed in the 29th over with the scoreboard reading 145-4.
Despite his dismissal Markram had set the platform for the middle and lower order to cash in and they did just that, with Hampshire going on to post 301-9 from their 50 overs.
Middlesex never really got going in reply, the top five all made starts but no one kicked on past fifty and Markram's off-spin accounted for three of Middlesex's top six; he finished with figures of 3-39 as Hampshire bowled out Middlesex for just 185 in 35 overs, with Abbott and Dawson joining Markram in picking up three scalps each.
