Kyle Abbott (6-37) - Nottinghamshire v Hampshire, County Championship: 9th June
In the 2019 County Championship, Hampshire played host to Nottinghamshire in the inaugural first-class match at Newclose, near Newport on the Isle of Wight – also Hampshire’s first match on the island since 1962.
Nottinghamshire responded in the same fashion for the return in their county, hosting Hampshire on the Welbeck Colliery ground – known officially as the John Fretwell Sporting Complex, and incidentally just a couple of weeks earlier, Hampshire’s women had won there by six wickets.
But whereas the Isle of Wight provided almost throughout, warmth and sunshine in delightful settings, Welbeck was spoiled by rain, although not before Kyle Abbott’s 6-37 had led the dismissal of the doomed Nottinghamshire side for just 162.
Hampshire replied on that first evening with 93-2 (Weatherley 47*) but that was it – over the following three days, not a ball was bowled.
