Hampshire Cricket's historian Dave Allen takes a look back on timely memorable moments in his ‘On This Day’ series.

Hampshire v Sussex, County Championship: 25th - 27th May 1995

This – the 26th May 1995 - was the second day of a three-day innings victory over Sussex at Portsmouth.

On the first, Robin Smith scored 120 and Paul Terry 163* and although Terry was out early on this second day, the overnight 356-3 was taken to 534 which was the second highest score ever for Hampshire on the Naval ground – and the highest for 75 years.

John Stephenson who would become captain when Nicholas retired at the end of that season, took 4-45 and Sussex 143-7 overnight batted again the next morning, 338 behind.

Nicholas set attacking fields throughout and there were some easy runs, but in neither innings did any Sussex batsman reach 40, while Streak 4-81 and Connor and Stephenson with three wickets each ensured a victory by an innings and 106 runs.
